This place has such high praise for a very good reason. The owner/chef is extremely friendly and accommodating, and the home-cooking is incredibly tasty. Best overall experience we’ve had at a restaurant in a long time!

Best Indian food, I had in this cozy restaurant. I am from north India and I recommend this restaurant as a perfect Indian home style cooking.

Authentic, delicious, cozy, and friendly.

We are just leaving the restaurant and can’t stop talking about how wonderful the curry was, the owners are personable and spoke with us and all patrons. Very family friendly and if you have a wee one you can expect they will be spoiled by the owners. Oh and the vegan curry was amazing. Highly recommend.

Love this place. The couple that run it are so friendly. They do one vegan option- vegan curry with chapati and rice. I guess what it is depends on the day, I got a delicious lentil curry and then could add some spicy pickle to it to give it a bit of kick. Small place, small menu but big flavours :) price was 780 (march 2019) and they gave me a free little pudding (vegetarian not vegan)

Excellent Indian food by an Indian chef who has ended up living here. We met his family (including son) who were all very polite and friendly. The food was great and they gave us free gifts at the end too. The restaurant itself is tiny and in a courtyard with other tiny outlets (many of which had closed by the evening though some local bars were open). There is outdoor and indoor seating and one can see how the dishes are made too. The menu is limited but the food is authentic and in generous portions.

We had such an amazing experience here. The Tali is the best Tali I've had outside India. The owners are so so nice, and the food outstanding, and the pricing reasonable. A must visit in Matsumoto!

Amazing flavours in everything - even the homemade chilli spice powder! Just what we needed as a break from Japanese food.

The food was great, here's why I gave it 5 stars: the owner, Ashish; very friendly and engaging, very authentic guy, speaks English, Hindi and Japanese. The place only has 4 seats.

Great food and super friendly owners of the shop.Had the combo so I could try everything and it was all the best curry I have had here around Japan. Many places that offer all you can eat options have very thin/watery curry, whereas here you can tell that it's made fresh. It's thick and rich and very tasty. Along with the friendly service and clientele, well worth a short trip out of your way to hit up!

I can’t say enough good things about this place. The owners are a lovely married couple and the husband is from India. They are always super friendly and chatty with the customers! The food is amazing. All of the spices come straight from India so you know you’re getting an authentic dish. Sometimes, if you’re lucky, they even give you a little surprise treat at the end of your meal. You will not be disappointed!

Incredible curries, and if you can’t eat gluten it’s nearly all gluten free (aside from the chapatis). The owner seemed really good in catering for allergies too. It’s also a cool location, set across a few small buildings in a courtyard. The only shame is that it’s only open until 7:30 in the evening!

Visited Doon Shokudo Indoyama Indian Restaurant during a family trip to Matsumoto, Japan. It is located in a courtyard with several individual small buildings to include the kitchen and separate dining room. Our room had shelves stocked with Indian grocery items for sale and the staff regularly grabbed items to prepare at the restaurant. We enjoyed the chicken curry and my wife had the vegan curry. The staff was extremely friendly they too time to know us and they gave us free samples of the Mango Lassi. I highly recommend this restaurant.

By any standard and/or region, Doon Shokudo Indoyama offers fantastic, delicious, inexpensive (and filling) curry. The owners are delightful, and made our group of four feel very welcome. We were even able to take some of their homemade spice mix with us as we continued our Japanese travels. Highly recommended dining experience, which topped off a wonderful two days in Matsumoto.

Wow! Delicious and authentic. English speaking staff and menu. Everything we tried was incredible, amazing balance of different spices. And they are super friendly, as well! Impeccable service and they even gave us two sealed tea packets after the meal to enjoy later.

A rare North Indian food gem in Japan! We had both the pork curry and chicken curry. Both were excellent! The food comes with a nice chapati and also an original spice that you can add on to your curry to elevate the curry's level of tastiness! The chef/owner was super friendly. He told us he wanted to retire in India one day. So do visit this place before he moved out of Japan!!

The owners are so sweet and truly couldn't be nicer! The vegan green curry was delicious and so authentic and fresh. He even makes this amazing Indian bread right on the spot. Really loved this place and the owners! They're truly the nicest people I've met on my trip and I couldn't recommend this place more!

Home cooked Delight!I was so lucky to visit Doon shokudo today it's run by Ashish who is actually from Dehradun and is such an humble person after reading so many good reviews about this restaurant I decided to pay a visit but when I went there he mentioned that the food is over and he won't be able to serve a lot to me when his wife came and said that if we wait they can probably serve us something , we waited and we were served with delicious home cooked vegetarian Thali which consists of Dal, rice, Boondo Raita, Mirchi Achaar, Gulab Jamun , Papa's and a wheat fulka. Ashish is such a good host so he made sure that we were entertained during our wait at the end he also made some delicious chai for me.If you are going to be in Matsumoto , i would highly recommend visiting this place.

Simply amazing! The food is simply amazing (also excellent quality and value for money!) and the owner is lovely and a pleasure to chat to. Will definitely be coming back when we’re next in the area.

Great food, fun atmosphere, and the nicest people I've met ❤They have vegan and vegetarian options, and even soy milk chai! The two vegetable curries I had (I had to come back a second time) were superb, and the soy chai was perfect as well.Would recommend to everyone, and vegans/vegetarians in particular!

Possibly the first time i've seen a 4.9 rating with ~100 reviews.But this tiny Curry place 100% deserves it. It's really good food with a nice atmosphere. For the owner alone is worth a visit.

Absolutely amazing Indian food. Small space with the owner basically cooking in front of you while joyfully having a conversation with you if you wish to. Great spot if you aren't in a rush and want some authentic homemade recipes. My girlfriend is also Celiac/gluten-free and all the food we had was 100% gluten free. Owner is knowledgeable of the allergy as well. Highly highly highly recommend.

Absolutely brilliant! The food is so authentic and is made by a very passionate and friendly chef. He even took the time to describe all the components of the thali and explain the best way to eat and enjoy the meal. Great guy, unreal food and very good value. Currys were about ¥880 and thali’s were ¥1,100. Highly recommend, would go back if we were here another night.

Quite a small shop but certainly authentic food cooked by an authentic chef who is very focused on quality and customer service. If you are interested in this type of food then this is probably the best place in Matsumoto that you can go-certainly try this place.

Best curry I have ever had! Truly delicious, and a real family restaurant. The owner and his wife are lovely people who enjoy talking with their customers, and the price is very reasonable. Every time I am in Matsumoto, I am sure to come here. Truly a wonderful experience every time.

Doon Shokudo Indoyama was the most fun and delicious meal we had in Matsumoto! We made a reservation via Facebook. When we arrived, we were met at the door by Ashish, the master chef himself, who greeted me by name. The place itself is quaint and homey. We ordered one chicken dish and one keema. They were both outstanding, and surprise hero was Ashish’s special homemade spice mixture, “Ashish Masala”, which he now sells in jars (try it- the stuff is magical). The best part of the experience was getting to hang out and chat with Ashish and Mayuma about their experiences, and swap travel stories. They are absolutely lovely humans. If you find yourself in Matsumoto, Indoyama is an absolute must!

You must visit this restaurant when you are in town! Great food and good prices.The chicken and veggan curry were so good, I even ordered another dish.Plus,the owners were very nice and knows English well.I wish there were more dishes on the menu.

A little out of the way, hidden in an area hit by bad economic conditions. If taking a cab, easier if you show the place on Google map and the driving directions. Address even in Japanese is not helpful to them. Food is excellent home made style. Made to order chai is a must on a cold day. Shown are the vegetable (vegan) and chicken curry with chipati.

Fantastic dining experience. The staff were very friendly and welcoming, and we also had a lovely chat with the customers next to us. The food was delicious with generous portion sizes and well priced. All the curries were gluten free. The staff all spoke English well and they gave us a gift to take back to Australia. Highly recommended if you're in Matsumoto!

Simply amazing. The food was fresh and homemade, and served in a homely atmosphere. The owner/chef chatted with us about his life in Japan and offered suggestions of things to do in Matsumoto. Such great hospitality, one of our top meals in Japan hands down. There is also something for everyone here - the vegan curry is gluten free and dairy free. Their chicken curry (pictured below) is delicious and fresh. If I could give it 10 stars, I would.
